    -4 (7a+5) = -160

    -28a-20=-160 multiply through by - 4

    -28a=-160+20 add 20 to both sides

    -28a=-140

    a=-140/-28 divide both sides by - 28

    a = 5

    you distribute - 4 into 7a+5 making it - 28a-20=-160 add 20 on both sides - 160+20=-140 then divide - 28 to - 140 making a=5
