    Alex would've scored either 3,4 or 5.

    Step-by-step explanation:

Well since it says <9 goals, we'll take it like that and form the equation.

Suppose Sam scored x goals which means Alex scored x+3 goals since he's scored 3 more than Sam. So the equation becomes something like-

    x+x+3 < 9 [ x+x+3 since together they scored less than 9]

    ⇒ 2x+3<9

    ⇒2x<6 ⇒x<3

Thus possible chances are 0,1 and 2. You just add that to Alex's score which is (x+3) and u get his possible goals as 3,4 or 5, thereby satisfying the total goals of <9.
