On Sunday randy volunteered at the animal shelter for 4 1/2 hours in te morning and 2 1/4 in the afternoon. He spent 1/3 of his time with the dogs. Randy says he spent 2 1/4 hours with the dogs on Sunday. Is he correct? Explain why or why not.

    Make all their denominators the same:

    4 2/4, 2 1/4

    4 2/4 + 2 1/4 = 6 3/4

    1/3 of 6 is 2

    and 1/3 or 3/4 is 1/4

    therefore he did spend 2 1/4 hours with the dogs so he is correct.
