If you write out all the factors of 14, you get 14 and 1, then 2 and 7. If you write out all the factors of 24, you get 24 and 1, or 8 and 3, or 6 and 4, or (6,2,2,), or (3,2,2,2)

The largest factor whoch si common to both is 2. So pull a 2 out of both terms, which gives 2 (7x-12) you can tell that we are done since the terms 7 and 12 do not have any more common factors.
