    5x=5 (20) = 20 for Ed

    2x=2 (20) = 40 for pete

    together they had 140 cars

    Step-by-step explanation:

    5:2 is the ratio

    5x-30=2x+30 tat when Ed gave Pete 30 cars

    solve for x

    5x-2x=30+30

    3x=60

    x=20

    substitute for x: 5x=5 (20) = 20 for ED

    2x=2 (20) = 40 for pete
