Shannon states that 7 5/8 - 5 1/3 = 2 4/5 because 7 - 5 = 2, 5 - 1 = 4, and 8 - 3 = 5. First, state whether you agree or disagree. Then, explain briefly how to subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Be sure to show your solution as a subtraction equation.

    Step-by-step explanation:

I disagree with Shannon because the denominators are different so you can not subtract the numerators like that. Also, you can't subtract the denominators of fractions. To subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators I would first subtract the whole numbers, 7 and 5 to get 2. Then I would subtract 5/8 and 1/3. To do this, I would find the LCM and multiply each fraction so that there denominators are equal to each other. Lastly, I would combine 2 and the answer to 5/8 - 1/3 to get my answer.

    1) 7 5/8 - 5 1/3

    2) 7-5: 2

    3) 5/8 - 1/3 = 15/24-8/24 = 7/24

    4) Answer: 2 7/24
