Mr. Nguyen bought a package of 4 chicken legs and a package of 6 chicken wings. Ms. Dawen bought a package of 3 chicken legs and a package of 6 chicken wings. Mr. Nguyen bought 52 ounces of chicken. Ms. Dawen bought 45 ounces of chicken. How much did each chicken leg and each chicken wing weigh? Let x represent the weight of the chicken leg and y represent the weight of the chicken wing.

    Mr. Nguyen bought 4 chicken legs and 6 chicken wings which collectively weighed 52 ounces i. e. 4x + 6y = 52

    Ms. Dawen bought 3 chicken legs and 6 chicken wings that collectively weighed 45 ounces i. e. 3x + 6y = 45

    We have two equations, to get the weight of each variable x and y, we use the elimination method of simultaneous equation to solve.

    Eqn 1 ... 4x + 6y = 52

    Eqn 2 ... 3x + 6y = 45

    We subtract each variable in eqn (2) from that of eqn (1). i. e.

    4x - 3x, 6y - 6y and 52 - 45

    We then have; x + 0 = 7

    Thus, x = 7

    To get y, we substitute x in eqn 2

    Since 3x + 6y = 45

    3 (7) + 6y = 45

    21 + 6y = 45

    6y = 45 - 21

    6y = 24

    y = 4

    Thus x=7 and y=4. This means that the weight of the chicken leg is 7 ounces and that of the chicken wing is 4 ounces.
