    X=1st y=2nd

    x+2y=13 2x+y=14

    First set one of the equations equal to x or y

    x=13-2y now plug this in the other equation for x

    2 (13-2y) + y=14 distribute

    26-4y+y=14 - ->26-3y=14

    get the y alone

    -3y=14-26 - -> - 3y=-12

    divide by - 3 on both sides

    y=4

    now plug 4 into one of the original equations to find x

    x+2 (4) = 13 - ->x+8=13 - -> x=13-8

    x=5
