y=number of hats bro has

x is 4 times y

x=4y

together (x+y) it is 50

x+y=50

since x=4y, replace x with fy

4y+y=50

5y=50

divide both sides by 5

y=10

x=4y

x=4 (10)

x=40

you have 40 and bro has 10

x + y = 50

x = 4y

4y + y = 50

5y = 50

y = 50/5
