    Write x-4 instead of y.

    x² + (x-4) ²=40

    x²+x²-8x+16=40

    2x²-8x-24=0

    x²-4x-12=0

    (x-6) (x+2) = 0

    x=6 or x=-2

    for x=6, y=6-4 = 2

    for x=-2, y=-2-4 = - 6
