1) A cab charges $1.75 for the first mile and $0.25 for each additional mile.

Write and solve an inequality to determine how many miles Eddie can travel if he has $15 to spend.

A) $1.75 + $0.25x ≤ $15; x ≤ 53 miles

B) $1.75 + $0.25x ≥ $15; x ≥ 53 miles

C) $0.25 + $1.75x ≤ $15; x ≤ 8 miles

D) $0.25 + $1.75x ≥ $15; x ≥ 8 miles

2) A box of crayons costs $1.75, including tax. Mr. Valentino wants to purchase boxes of crayons for his class and has a $25 budget.

Write an inequality to solve for the number of boxes of crayons Mr. Valentino can purchase with his budget.

The total cost is equal to the sum of the cost for first mile and that of the x number of miles after that. This sum should not exceed Eddie's available amount. The equation that best represent the condition is,

    $1.75 + $0.25x ≤ 15

The value of x is x ≤ 53 miles. Therefore the answer is letter B.

    2. Let x be the number of crayons that Mr. Valentino can buy, the inequality that best represent the situation is,

    1.75x ≤ 25

The value of x is approximately 14.29 but Mr. Valentino can only buy 14 crayons.
