In a factory, 50 out of 1,000 pens are found to be defective.

What percentage of the pens is defective?

    The easiest way for (me) to do this, you first find 10% of 1,000 which is 1000 * 0.1 = 100

    100 pens = 10%, divide both by 2.

    50 pens = 5%
