A rectangle has a perimeter of 58 inches. Find the dimensions of the rectangle if the length is 3 inches more than the width.

    P = 58 inches;

    l = 3 + w; where l = the length; w = the width; P = the perimeter;

    But, P = 2l + 2w;

    Then. 58 = 2 (3 + w) + 2w;

    58 = 6 + 2w + 2w;

    58 = 6 + 4w;

    52 = 4w;

    w = 52:4;

    w = 13 inches;

    l = 3 + 13 = 16 inches.
