3) From 1995 to 2000 the cost of food increased by 53% in a certain city, the cost of housing increased by 40%, and the cost of transportation increased by 34%. If the average salaried worker spent 28% of his or her income on food, 35% on hosing, and 14% on transportation, what is the combined percentage increase in the cost of these items?

    The combined percentage for the cost of food is 81%, housing is 75% and for the transportation is 48%.

    You just have to add both the cost of a certain unit (food/housing/transportation) increase and the percentage spent by an average salaried worker on a certain unit (food/housing/transportation).
