You need to find a common denominator, so 12. Convert the fractions:

    9/12 + 10/12

    Then add.

    9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12

Okay Megan831, the first thing we must do is find a common denominator.

We do this by find what 4 and 6 will both fit into.

In this case they both fit into 12

Now knowing this we want to make 12 the denominator for both 3/4 and 5/6, but we must remember to change to numerator too so that the value of both the numbers doesn't change.

    3/4 = 9/12 and 5/6 = 10/12

The problem should now look like this ...

    9/12 + 10/12

Since the denominator of the two are the same we can simply add the numerators 9 + 10 = 19

, but remember to keep the denominator 12

so it should look something like this ...

    19/12
