    Let x = the cost of a pencil, let 10x=the cost of a notebook

    8.50=4x+3 (10x)

    8.5=34x

    x=.25

    A pencil costs $0.25

    A notebook costs $2.50 (.25*10)

    One notebook and one pencil = $2.75
