    In scientific notations, only the first digit of a number is allowed to stay before the decimal. In this case 1 stays on the left side of the decimal. and the rest stays on the right. Also you dont right the zeros. So ... 1.43 x 10 to the power of 9. the number of digits onthe right side of the decimal determines the power on 10.
