1. Solve the absolute value equation, if possible. If there is no solution, explain why.

    5x + 13 = - 7

    -13 - 13

    5x = - 20

    divide by 5

    x = - 4

    There is no solution. The 'l l' bars in the equation means absolute value. Basically absolute value is the positive value of whatever '5x+13'.

    In short l 5x+13 l has to be a positive number.

    Since - 7 is a negative number, l 5x+13 l can never be equal to it.
