A circle has its center at the center of a square with 6-inch sides. Find the area of the square not covered by the circle. Round the answer to the nearest tenth.

    Assuming the circle is inscribed in the square, the length of the side of the square is also the diameter of a circle.

    The area of the square is 6 x 6 or 36in²

    For the circle A=π r ²

    In this case A = π 3² (Since the diameter is 6 the radius is half of that, or 3)

    A = π 9 ≈ 28.26 in ²

    36 in² - 28.26in² = 7.74 in² - area of the square not covered by the circle
