So story problems always have something that will confuse you. The confusion thing in this is the 40%. All you want to do is multiply 3540 * 1.4 you do that and you get 4956 then its super easy 4956 / 118 = 42 $

To find out how much the employees donated set up an equation

3540 =.40x

Divide both sides by. 4

x = $8850

To find the average contribution of the 118 employees, divide the 8850 by 118

$8850/118 = $75

The average contribution was $75
