    2x - 12 divided by 3 = 7

    12 divided by 3 = 4

    2x - 4 = 7

    +4 + 4

    2x = 11

    Divide each side by 2

    x = 5 1/2

    First divide 12 by 3

    then we have 2x-4=7

    add 4 to both sides to get 2x=12

    divide both sides by 2 to get x=6
