    If I used 480 quarts of oil and 76% still remains, it means that I used 100% - 76% = 24% of the oil.

    So we know that 480 quarts are as much as 24% of an unknown number. We can write it down as:

    480 = 24% from x

    480 = 24/100x / * 100 (both sides)

    48 000 = 24x / : 24 (both sides)

    x = 2000

    So there are 2000 quarts in the oil. We used 480 of them, so there's still remaining 2000 - 480 = 1520 quarts.
