Alright. This may seem tricky but it is very simple to do. Look at the problem. You know 52 students play sports, and they make up 40% of the school.

You can set up a mathematical expression then to relate what you know. You know the number of students playing sports, but you don't know how many students there are. You can set this up as 52/x, where x represents the total number of kids in the school. Next, you have your percentage. If x is everybody at the school, that means 100% of the kids right?

So you can set that up as 0.4/1 (this is the same as 40/100, but since we; re dealing with percentage you have to take it back two decimal places; 100%=1 and 40%=0.4)

Now, set the two equations against each other so you have

    52/x = 0.4/1

    Cross multiply to get 0.4x=52

    Divide 0.4 by both sides and x = 130.

    So there are 130 students.

To check your answer, put 52/130 and you will get 40%, which is correct.
