    Anytime you multiply a whole number by a fraction or decimal, you have to make the fraction and decimal increase its value. So 1/4 can be translated into. 25 and 5 x. 25 is 1.25. 5 x 4 is 20. Since 5 and 4 are both whole numbers, the answer is increased by both.

    5x4 = 20

    5x1/4 = 5/4 or = 1.25

    so 20 > 1.25 then 5x4 is greater than 5x1/4
