Since Hallie had 10 times as many pages that Janet had, Hallie would be represented as 10x and Janet would be represented just as x, so 10x + x = 264

11x = 264 then divide both sides of the equals sign by 11 to get x by itself, so x = 24, so Janet read 24 pages for her homework assignment, while 24 * 10 = 240, while Hallie read 240 pages for her homework assignment, and to check if the answer is correct, 240 is 10 times larger than 24, and 240 + 24 = 264.

This was taken from TehGuyy, so i have to give him the credit.
