How are the processes of adding monomials and adding polynomials alike? How are the processes different?

    When you add or subtract, you can only combine terms that have the same exponents with the same variables, like 3x^2y + 5x^2y. Both have x^2 and both have y. If one of them were missing, say, the y, you wouldn't be able to combine them. All you have to do is add or subtract the coefficient. This is true for both monomials and polynomials.
