    J = Joan

    a = amber

    a = 2j - 2

    j + a = 34

    j + 2j - 2 = 34

    3j - 2 = 34

    +2 + 2

    3j = 36

    j = 12

    j + a = 34

    12 + a = 34

    -12 - 12

    a = 22

    Joan would be 12 years old and Amber would be 22 years old.
