    X + 5 = x + 0.25x

    x + 5 = 1.25x

    5 = 1.25x - x

    5 = 0.25x

    5/0.25 = x

    20 = x

    check ...

    x + 5 = x + 0.25x

    20 + 5 = 20 + 0.25 (20)

    25 = 20 + 5

    25 = 25 (correct)

    Half the bill is $ 20.
