    Steve = x marbles, Larry = 3x/7 - 39 marbles

    Total marbles = 171 = steves + lary’s

    X + 3x/7 - 39 = 171

    X + 3x/7 = 171 + 39

    10x/7 = 210

    10x = 210 * 7

    10x = 1470 X = 147

    Larry = 3/7 (147) - 39

    Larry = 63 - 39 = 24

    Steve = 147

    Total marbles = 147 + 24 = 171
