What does subtotal mean

Subtotal - the total of one set of a larger group of figured to be added

If you're adding up a bunch of numbers, you add them

one at a time. When you're only part of the way through

and still have more numbers left to add, the "subtotal" is

your total so far, not including the numbers you still have

to add to get the final, real total.
