West and east cancel each other out the subtract north by south so 3 1/2 - 1 1/4

    = 9/4 or 2 1/4

Since the jogger ran both a mile East and a mile West, the distances cancel each other.

He ran 3.5 miles North and 1.25 miles South, so to find the actual distance, just subtract 1.25 from 3.5 to get

    2.25 miles, (North of home.).
