Determine which relation is a function.

A.

{ (-4, 3), (-2, 3), (-1, 2), (2, 5), (3, 2) }

B.

{ (-4, 1), (-2, 3), (-2, 1), (-1, 5), (3, 2) }

C.

{ (-4, 1), (-2, 3), (-1, 2), (3, 5), (3, 2) }

D.

{ (-4, 1), (-2, 3), (-1, 1), (-1, 5), (3, 2) }

    Ok so first lets look at the x values.

    If it is a function no values will be repeated in the x value spot

    So lets look.

    In A we have for x

    -4

    -2

    -1

    2

    and 3

    Now (keep in mind if its a negative it will appear on the other side of the chart)

    As you can see none of the same values were repeated, if they were to be repeated then it would be like - 2 - 2 3 4

    But if its 2 - 2 then were ok.

    So A is your answer but lets look at the others. Repeated values will be bolded.

    -4

    -2

    -2

    -1

    3

    So B is not it

    -4

    -2

    -1

    3

    3

    therefore C is not it.

    and lastly D.

    -4

    -2

    -1

    -1

    3

    -1 was repeated so not it.

    Your answer is A.
