    (length) = 2 * (width) - 3

    (length) * (width) = 44

plug the first equation into the second equation and get:

    (width) * [2 * (width) - 3] = 44 then distribute

    2 * (width) ^2 - 3 (width) - 44 = 0 then solve

    (width) = 11/2 or - 4

but physical lengths cannot be negative

so we have (width) = 11/2

then we can plug that back into the first equation:

    (length) = 2 * (11/2) - 3 = 8

therefore your Width would be 11/2 ft

and your Length would be 8 ft
