Upwelling is the process by which cold water from the ocean rises to the surface. Upwelling usually takes place in the open ocean or along coastlines and are as a result of winds blowing across the surface that push water away. Upwelling occurs along the western coast of south America. Upwelling brings nutrients to the surface and as such thriving fishing industries are located where this process takes place.
