Sunlight is an electromagnetic wave carrying energy that is absorbed by the skin. The sun's electromagnetic wave usually in the form of ultravoilent rays damages cells in the epidermis layer of the skin as it reaches the earth. When the outer layer of the skin gets damaged by the sun's rays, the skin makes even more melanin to try to protect the skin from further damage. This energy absorbed by the skin causes sun burn especially when the person is exposed to the sun's radiation for long.
