A one-dimensional motion can be plotted in a Cartesian plane. The Cartesian plane was first discovered by Rene Descartes. This is composed of four quadrants produced by the two intersecting axes, the x and y.

    (1) Hence, the motion can be described using two directions, x and y.

    (2) The symbol that should be used for the identification is (x, y).
