Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

Some people love burnt toast. I personally do not, but I know many people who do. Typically that setting is for stuff that takes longer to get crispy.

My wife makes toast and hot dogs in the toaster oven. She likes them both burned to a horrible crisp. Sometimes she'll run either of them again, for a second cycle. I am not making this up.
