Because if you put it in the freezer it will freeze witch will slow down the rotting process

The freezer has a cooler temperature than the fridge which means it will be better at keeping the food preserved. When it's cold microorganisms (who spoil food normally) are prevented from growing and the oxidation of fats (which causes rancidity.) is slowed down as well. This means the food is less likely to spoil than if it was in a warmer temperature. (freezer vs. fridge)
