Due to its importance, light is studied by a lot of scientists during the early times. They found out through empirical tests that the speed of light is 300 million meters per second. Scientists also studied its behavior and found out that it could act as a particle or as a wave.

In electromagnetic radiation, light travels as waves as they are transmitted like signals that is invisible to the naked eye. Since it behaves like a wave, it is measured in terms of wavelength and frequency. Wavelength is the measure from amplitude to amplitude, or from crest to crest. The relationship between wavelength, frequency and speed of electromagnetic waves that is composed of light emitted or absorbed by electrons is:

c = λν, where c is the speed of light in m/s, λ is the wavelength in m, and ν is the frequency in s⁻¹.
