Lamarck's theory was called the theory of acquired characteristics and Darwin's was called the theory of evolution by natural selection. Lamarck believed that organisms could acquire characteristics during their lifetime that they could pass down to their offspring, but Darwin did not believe these traits could be passed down. Lamarck does not believe in survival of the fittest, while Darwin’s natural selection theory is based on survival of the fittest.
