The world long jump record is 8.95 m (Mike Powell, USA, 1991). Treated as a projectile, what is the maximum range obtainable by a person if he has a take-off speed of 9.5 m/s?

    Since the motion is considered as a projectile

    the main formula of the range is

    R = V²o sin²2α / g

    the value of R is maximum when α = Pi / 4 (or 45°)

    so the value of

    Rmax = V²o sin²2Pi/4 / g = 9.5² * 1 / 9.8 = 9.2 m

    Rmax = 9.2 m
