1.0 x 10^4 kg spacecraft is traveling through space with a speed of 1200 m/s relative to Earth. A thruster fires for 2.0 mins, excerting a continious force of 25kN on the spacecraft in a direction opposite the spacecraft's motion. Calculate the initial momentum and final momentum of the space craft?

    Answer: a = - F/m = - 2.5*10^4/10^4 = - 2.5 m/sec^2 Î"V = a*Î"t = - 2.5*120 = - 300 m/sec Vf = Vi+Î"V = 1200-300 = 900 m/sec Ii = m*Vi = 10^4*1.2*10^3 = 12*10^6 kgm/sec If = m*Vf = 10^4*0.9*10^3 = 9.0*10^6 kgm/sec
