    Answer: the total number of energy levels the electron can jump to.

    Explanation:

    The spectral lines (which may be emission or absorption lines) correspond to to the loss (release) or gain (absortion) of energy of the electrons when they jump between energy levels.

    So, the greater the number of energy levels the greater the number of spectral lines.
