    Projectile motion is a two dimensional motion. When you project an object in two dimensional plane, it will move in both, y as well as x direction. The gravity acts only in vertically downward direction i. e towards y direction. Therefore only vertical component of the velocity is affected and horizontal component remains unchanged.
