Density is the ratio of the substance's mass to its volume. Most solids are too dense that they sink when placed on a container of liquid. There are exceptions to this like wood, foams, and water. Water is a very special case because liquid water is more dense than solid ice. This is contrary to other solid materials that generally sink.
