Some fuels are classified as non-renewable because they cannot be replenished in our lifetimes if they are used up. Petroleum, coal and natural gas are examples of non-renewable sources of energy. Most of the petroleum resources that we use today began as forests in swampy areas of the Carboniferous period over three hundred million years ago.
