PART ONE

In a 31 s interval, 320 hailstones strike a glass

window of area 1.455 m^2

at an angle 70◦ to the window surface. Each hailstone has a mass of

6 g and speed of 4.6 m/s. If the collisions are elastic, find the average

force on the window.

Answer in units of N.

PART TWO

Find the pressure on the window.

Answer in units of N/m^2

    Impulse = change in momentum

    F Δt = m Δv

    F (31 s) = (320 * 0.006 kg) (4.6 sin 70° m/s - (-4.6 sin 70° m/s))

    F = 0.535 N

    Pressure = force / area

    P = F / A

    P = 0.535 N / 1.455 m²

    P = 0.368 Pa
