A stretched string of length L is observed to vibrate in seven equal segments when driven by a 686-Hz oscillator. What oscillator frequency will set up a standing wave so that the string vibrates in two segments?

    Answer: 196 Hz

    Explanation:

    F1 = F7 : 7

    = 686 / 7

    Therefore F1 = 98Hz

    Thus Oscillator frequency so that the string vibrates in 2 segments will be:-

    F2 = (n) (F1)

    = (2) (98)

    F2 = 196Hz
