In getting ready to slam-dunk the ball, a basketball player starts from rest and sprints speed of 6.0m/sin 1.5. Assuming that the player accelerates uniformly, determine the distance he runs.

    Using newton's equation of motion,

    S = (u+v) t/2 ... Equation 1

    Where S = distance covered by the basket ball player, u = initial velocity of the basket ball payer, v = final velocity of the basket ball player, t = time.

    Note: The basket starts from rest, as such the initial velocity = 0 m/s

    Given: u = 0 m/s (from rest), v = 6 m/s, t = 1.5 s.

    Substitute into equation 1

    S = (6+0) 1.5/2

    S = 9/2

    S = 4.5 m.

    Hence the distance covered by the basket ball player = 4.5 m.
