In a physics lab, Asha is given a 10.5 kg uniform rectangular plate with edge lengths 66.3cm by 52.1cm. Her lab instructor requires her to rotate the plate about an axis perpendicular to its plane and passing through one of its corners, and then prepare a report on the project. For her report, Asha needs the plate's moment of inertia? with respect to given rotation axis. Calculate?.

    The plate's moment of inertia is 2.489 kg * m²

    Explanation:

    Step 1: Data given

    mass of the uniform rectangular plate = 10.5 kg

    lengths of the plate = 66.3cm by 52.1cm

    Step 2: Calculate moment of inertia

    For an axis through the center of the rectangle, I = m[ (w²+L²) / 12

    Using the parallel axis theorem, the added value of I = mR² = m[ (w²/4 + L²/4]

    IF we get both reactions together we get:

    I = (m/3) * (w²+L²)

    I = 10.5/3 * (0.663² + 0.521²)

    I = 2.489 kg * m²

    The plate's moment of inertia is 2.489 kg * m²
